How a Septic System Works

With a typical plumbing system, waste and gray water from washing machines, sinks, toilets, and other drains flow through the property’s pipelines until they connect with the local sewer line. From there, the waste moves to water treatment facilities to break down the waste. Rural homes or properties that don’t connect to the main sewer line won’t access the municipal wastewater treatment center. Instead, the waste moves from the house into septic tanks located on the property. The tanks are usually underground with a lid about 12 inches beneath the surface of the land. Inside the tank, sewage separates into three layers: solid, scum, and liquid. The sludge usually sinks to the bottom, while scum floats on top of the liquid layer in the middle.

The natural bacteria inside the septic tank will break down the sludge and scum levels, turning them into liquid. When enough liquid accumulates inside the septic tank, it will flow through the main pipe that breaks off into several smaller lines leading into a drain or leach field. The drain field area, also on the property, contains other bacteria that will decompose hazardous viruses and bacteria as the wastewater seeps into the soil. Soil, rocks, and minerals act as natural filters so that the water is treated after leaving the tank and seeping into the drain field. The scum layer left in the tank will continue to accumulate because the bacteria can’t break everything down. That’s why septic tank cleaning is necessary.

Septic Tank Maintenance

Sewage tank cleaning is a must, but some good practices can ensure that the septic system functions correctly. Proper maintenance can also reduce the frequency of cleaning services. For instance, you can reduce how much wastewater goes into the tank by limiting water usage while grooming, cooking, or cleaning dishes.

Other ways to maintain septic systems is to:

  • Take shorter showers
  • Use the dishwasher or washing machine only when full
  • Install low-flow faucets, showerheads, and toilets
  • Do not pour excess oil or grease down drains

Our Answers To Your Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How do I know what kind of septic system my home has?

The 3 most common types of septic systems in Manitoba are:

    • Holding tanks: all grey and black water from the home or business goes into a self-contained tank and is pumped out frequently.
    • Septic field: A standard two-sided septic tank is used and the liquids are pumped or gravity fed to a drain field in the property owner’s yard.
    • Low pressure sewer system: a standard two-sided septic tank, but the liquids are pumped out to a low pressure sewer system instead of a drain field in a backyard. The solid side of the tank still needs to be pumped out on a yearly basis.
  • How often should you clean your septic tank?

We recommend that you get your septic tank pumped annually for optimal maintenance. Some systems may need more or less frequent cleaning depending on the number of people living in the home and water usage.

  • Do we repair or replace septic systems?

Yes! We have a licensed plumbing department that specializes in septic system repair and replacement.
